5 Things No One Will Tell You About Your First Maternity Session

Are you having a baby and wondering if you should do a maternity session? Here’s 5 things no one will tell you about your first maternity session that you definitely should know!

  1. There is no “right time” or perfect week to schedule your maternity session.

When deciding on a date for your maternity portrait session, this is a really personal choice.. and here’s why. It’s’s best to schedule the session for when you'll have a nice baby bump but won't be too uncomfortable. Everyone carries differently so someone’s “little soccer ball” tummy at week 34 can be another mama-to-be’s “are you sure it’s not triplet’s” moment. We recommend 32-36 weeks pregnant as a good rule of thumb.

2. You don't have to be a professional model to take great maternity photos.

Our team will guide you through easy poses and share ideas for poses that will make you look and feel your best. You can also bring celebrity inspiration, Google search images and Pinterest mood board photos to share with us and we’ll just play! The idea is to keep everything light and fun (you simply can’t do this wrong… we’re celebrating you!)

3. You might feel a little nervous so before the shoot, take some time to pamper yourself.

Yep, I said it. It’s totally normal to want to do this and still be feeling a little excited/nervous/uncertain. The remedy? Self care Mama! Get your hair and makeup professionally done in our in-house salon here at Studio B or do it yourself if you are skilled like that, but don’t forget to pamper yourself! A little bit of extra pampering can help you feel confident and beautiful in front of the camera. (Same goes for Daddy by the way… let’s not underestimate the power of a fresh clean up for the fella’s for him. We have an anything but basic Essentials for Him service here too.

4. Selecting your “maternity style” is as important as the wardrobe choices themselves

When selecting your wardrobe: choose clothing that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Avoid anything too constricting. Ask yourself “who do I want to be photographically”… modern? formal? glam? romantic? chic? natural? For her: The north star is accentuating the blessing of a bump. Don't forget to bring along a few outfit options that allow for you to change your mind/mood. We have wraps and drapes here at the studio for you to do those artsy maternity images that whisper “cover of Vogue” for all to envy. For Him: clean, simple neutral colors and fits that keep all eyes on Mama’s baby on the way.

5. Consider the location for your maternity session

Do you to photograph in the studio or outdoors? Style plays into the answer to this question. Studio capture is iconic, inspired by art and absolutely agnostic of Seattle weather. Outdoor lifestyle settings are a time stamp to the season and a comfortable way to forget that the camera is on you. Some popular locations include parks, beaches, and gardens. As us about our favorite locations.

If you remember nothing at all, remember this: We do a lot of maternity photography at Studio B Portraits and we love nothing more than to help you make beautiful memories. This is such a special time in your life and your maternity photos will capture those moments forever.
