3 Style Tips for Fall Family Photos

One of the most popular times of year to photograph in the PNW is September and October. The weather is warm, the days are charged with end-of-summer-energy meets new-school-year-anticipation, and the outdoors are a beautiful sight to behold with the changing leaves and pretty golden light. For everyone thrilled to be photographing during this gorgeous window, we have three tips to share that will make styling your family that much easier!

01. Coordinated but not matching. The first order of business it to decide on a color palette that allows for range of options for your family members (to suit everyone’s skin tone and hair color). Having 1-2 main colors with 1-2 accent colors will allow for everyone to be coordinated but not matchy-matchy. We love how the Porter family chose maroon and navy as their primary colors with gray accents.

02. Don’t be afraid of pattern. We adore the visual dimension that patterns provide in family portraits! A good balance is to make sure that at least half of your people are in solid pieces or items that allow our eye to rest; that way, the patterns don’t overwhelm the photo but just enhance the overall style!

03. Consider comfort and mobility - especially with kiddos. If you have young kids, choosing outfits that still allow them to run around and enjoy the process is important! But to be honest with you, the same thing applies with teenagers and grown ups too - comfort goes a long way in building confidence! Now of course this does not always have to mean casual attire. A nice pair of chinos will dress up a basic shirt any day, and a flowy dress will keep you cool without sacrificing style.

Spending the day with the Porter family at Lake Sammamish was such a fun way to enjoy all the fabulousness that is Washington in the Fall! These four were quick to laugh and just radiated light on camera.
